Return Missionary Tie Cake

My family is a volleyball family. My husband played volleyball in high school and now he coaches it. We started playing together about 8 or 9 years ago, and I fell in love with the game too. Now our older boys play it as well and we look forward to the day when our whole family can play together. For now, we play with friends. Friends that we've known and played volleyball with for a long time. One of these friends has a son who recently returned from his mission in Puerto Rico where he served for two years for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We love their family, and when my friend asked me to make a cake for him... I was happy to make it!

The LDS missionary cake is the ever-so-popular vanilla raspberry, and the RM requested red velvet chocolate chip cupcakes after two years away from home. I used edible paper to make the tie on the cake, and tried hard to make it look like one of the ties that he was wearing on his mission. I think I matched it pretty well!

Not only did I get to make this cake and cupcakes, but we got to stay for the homecoming party and visit with many great friends who we hadn't seen in awhile. I love getting to make treats and celebrate too! And my boys were equally happy that they could eat the dessert they had to watch me make. Sometimes they just have to see the cakes be taken away to be enjoyed by other people...and beg me for scraps of fondant and to lick the bowl of frosting when I'm finished!
